Stefan Vladar

* 1965
The pianist and conductor Stefan Vladar is considered one of the most versatile musical personalities of our generation. This is rightfully so -as Vladar once said in an interview- because for him the profession of a musician is simply multifaceted. Two sides of Vladar’s personality are reflected in his work as a pianist and as a conductor, dual passions to which he devotes himself with great enthusiasm.

In 1985, at the age of only 19, Vladar won the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna. That year also marked the beginning of an international solo career that, took him in a very short time to the world’s most important musical capitals in Europe, the USA and the Far East. Among the orchestras with which he has performed are the Vienna Philharmonic, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under such notable directors as Claudio Abbado, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Chailly and Christoph von Donhnányi.

In 2009 he received the Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria.

An internationally renowned piano player and virtuoso, Vladar has always been admired for his exemplary mastery of the piano as well as the elegance and the expressive clarity of his interpretations. He brings the same qualities to his work as an artistic director and conductor. In the 2002-2003 season he was the principal director of the newly formed “recreation Grosses Orchester Graz”, in 1988 he became the artistic director of the Neuberg Festival, the Upper Austrian Monastery Concerts followed in 1999 and in 2008 he was named principal conductor and artistic director of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.

In his orchestral programmes Vladar seeks to perform not only the great works of the 20th century but also to revive the “undeservedly forgotten” composers of earlier eras. Thus he has dedicated himself, for example, to Mozart’s piano concertos and Mendelssohn’s five symphonies, which he believes have not received the recognition they deserve. In order to simultaneously satisfy his passion for playing the piano, he combines these symphonies with Beethoven’s piano concerti in concert.

Vladar’s concerts are hugely popular, not least because of his emphasis on the powerful and explosive moments in the works he performs. Their popularity is reflected in the numerous invitations he receives to tour and perform at leading festivals. Vladar’s discography includes more than 20 CDs, documenting his work as a solo pianist and as a conductor.

In 1999 Stefan Vladar was appointed to a professorship in piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
