Till A. Körber, trained as a pianist and choral conductor, largely taught himself composing. According to the program, he deals with the “three human forms of expression” in his three-movement Sonate for String Orchestra.
One would think that this refers to outwardly–directed communication, whereas the tone of the piece seemed astoundingly introverted and pervaded with inner faith. The first movement, named after the ancient dirge „Threnos“, whose motif returns as a prayer in the third movement „Canticum“, is, on the one hand, lamenting but without playing for effect. The rhythm, which is always carefully worked out, appears clearer, although often interrupted, in the middle movement „Ballata“. In spite of the dance association of the title, and contrary to expectation, no merriment is to be heard. In a very appealing way, this work strikes a balance between well thought-out composition and understandable, unobtrusive expression. In a trusting cooperation, Kevin John Edusei and the musicians of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra met these challenges convincingly. Translation by John Allan Moffatt.
