Pietro Mascagni

December 7th, 1863 – August 2nd, 1945

Biography

Pietro Mascagni was an Italian composer. He did not complete his conservatory training and at first lived in modest circumstances, supporting himself as a musician while composing only intermittently.

With Cavalleria rusticana, Mascagni won a competition for the best one act opera. The overwhelming success of its premiere in 1890 made him famous overnight, even beyond Italy. With its realistic portrayal of passion and conflict in a Sicilian village, the opera is regarded as one of the works that helped shape verismo in Italian opera.

His later operas show greater maturity and technical command, for example L’amico Fritz (1891) and Iris (1898), yet none came close to matching the sensational success of Cavalleria rusticana.

Much as Ruggiero Leoncavallo is remembered today chiefly for Pagliacci, Mascagni’s name remains closely associated with Cavalleria rusticana. Both operas marked the beginning of major careers whose early triumphs were difficult for either composer to surpass.
