Biography

Born in Lower Austria, Johannes Beranek is noted for his wide range of artistic work and most recently won the “Karl Österreicher” Conducting Award in June 2025. In 2026 he will be assistant conductor of the “Mozart Week” in Salzburg, where he will assist Roberto González-Monjas in the production of “The Magic Flute” with the Mozarteum Orchestra, and he will also assist Petr Popelka at the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In 2026 and 2027 he will appear as a guest conductor with the Musikkollegium Winterthur, and next season he will make his debut with the North Czech Philharmonic and the Vienna Academic Philharmonic. In April 2025 he participated in a workshop with Stéphane Denève and the New World Symphony Orchestra in Miami, and in February 2025 he was a quarter-finalist in the International Opera Conducting Competition of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie Liège. He assisted Petr Popelka in “Tristan and Isolde” in Prague, where he also took part in a masterclass with Popelka and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2024 he was a Conducting Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, where he made his American debut with works including Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Debussy’s La Mer, and the world premiere of Isabella Gellis’ Four Morris Interludes. While in Aspen he also worked closely with conductors such as George Jackson, Robert Spano, Jane Glover, and Nicholas McGegan. In August 2023 Beranek took part in the Conducting Masterclass at the University of St. Andrews with Prof. Sian Edwards, and in September 2025 he will participate in another masterclass with Prof. Johannes Schlaefli. As a conductor, he has worked with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Savaria Symphony Orchestra, the Solnok Symphony Orchestra, the Charkiv Opera Orchestra, Camerata pro musica, the Herzogenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienezza Chamber Orchestra, among others. Since March 2023 he has worked as a study assistant for opera conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he will also complete his studies in orchestral conducting with Prof. Mark Stringer next year. In 2021 he founded the festival “Sommernachtsklänge” in Lower Austria. Beranek is also active as a composer and has won several prizes for his works, including first prize at the Austrian competition “Jugend komponiert” at the “Aspekte” festival in Salzburg. In addition to his conducting studies, he completed his bachelor’s degree in horn at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and is currently pursuing his master’s degree at the MDW with Prof. Christoph Peham. As a horn player he has performed with ensembles such as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Volksopera, the ensemble Pygmalion, the orchestra Il pomo d’oro, the Tonkünstler Orchestra, and others.
