Composer

Jenö Takács

September 25th, 1902 – November 4th, 2005

Jenö Takács, born 25 September 1902 in Siegendorf, Burgenland, and died 14 November 2005 in Eisenstadt, was a distinctive voice of 20th century music, combining composition, pianism, teaching, and ethnological research. Educated in Vienna, he pursued an unusually international career with professorships in Cairo and Manila, and later a long tenure at the College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. His output ranges from piano and chamber works to orchestral and vocal compositions, marked by stylistic openness, crisp form, vivid rhythm, and an ear for timbre. Encounters with folk materials and broader musical traditions informed his language without reducing it to pastiche, resulting in music that is direct, colourful, and individual.
