Intermezzo
Op. 8for string orchestra
Composed 1900 to 1901, later incorporated into the Romantische Suite, Op. 14
Schreker’s Intermezzo, Op. 8 is an early miniature that already reveals the hallmarks of his mature voice, floating harmonic tension, meticulously blended sonorities, and an almost theatrical sense of colour within the string orchestra. From a restrained opening the music gathers intensity through subtle, carefully paced growth rather than overt display, keeping the sound world luminous and finely graded. Divided strings play a central role, creating a shimmering surface and a continuously shifting palette that can feel at once glassy, warm, and delicately veiled. The result is music that reads like a poetic interlude, inward, finely poised, and quietly compelling, a concentrated glimpse into Schreker’s distinctive imagination.
