Peter I. Tschaikowski

Blumenwalzer

Op. 71

from the Ballet "Der Nußknacker"

Composed: 1892

Premiered 18.12.1892 in Saint Petersburg

The Waltz of the Flowers is one of the great showpieces of The Nutcracker’s second act. Tchaikovsky does not write a delicate salon waltz, he builds a full scale dance scene that feels festive, yet deeply poetic. The introduction sets the atmosphere first with shimmer and restraint, then with growing momentum. When the main waltz theme arrives, it opens like a wide space, elegant, warm, and irresistibly forward moving. Much of its appeal lies in the shifting colours, the texture stays light, yet the musical arc has real weight, because the phrases are long and the climaxes are carefully prepared. It can sound like pure enchantment, and at the same time it shows Tchaikovsky’s instinct for the stage, the dance breathes, the pulse stays alive, and the music rises to a brilliant conclusion that feels like a crowning moment.
