Biography
Susanne Burgess is a British American soprano admired for her warm, vibrant timbre, refined legato, vocal agility, and compelling dramatic presence. Her artistry combines lyrical elegance with expressive depth, making her a distinctive performer both on stage and in concert.
She is a regular guest at The Metropolitan Opera, where her recent appearances include productions of Carmen, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Rigoletto. Upcoming seasons feature major role debuts such as Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Anna Sørensen in Kevin Puts’ Silent Night, and the Four Heroines in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, as well as the premiere of Gregory Spears’ new opera Sleepers Awake at Opera Philadelphia. Additional engagements have included Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Florida Grand Opera, and The Atlanta Opera.
An accomplished competition artist, she has received First Prize and the Audience Choice Award at both the Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year Competition and the Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition, First Prize at the National Opera Association’s Argento Competition, Second Prize at the Opera Mississippi John Alexander Competition, and was the Georgia District Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in both 2021 and 2022. She is also a recipient of a Career Grant from The Gerda Lisner Foundation in New York City.
A frequent concert performer, Susanne Burgess made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2017 with the New England Symphony Orchestra.
