Michael Haydn

Leopoldus Mass

MH 837

Sancti Leopoldi pro Festo sanctorum innocentium

Composed: 1805

  1. Kyrie
  2. Gloria
  3. Credo
  4. Sanctus
  5. Benedictus
  6. Agnus Dei

Michael Haydn’s Leopold Mass is a late setting that favours clarity and proportion. The vocal writing remains transparent, the musical ideas are concise, and the overall pacing follows the liturgical text with a sense of natural flow rather than monumental weight. A characteristic feature is the balance between full choral statements and more solo led passages, creating contrast while maintaining continuity.

In the Kyrie and Gloria, Haydn combines a ceremonial tone with flexible, often dance like motion. The Credo is more distinctly articulated, shaped by clear contrasts between affirming sections and more lyrical episodes. Sanctus and Benedictus focus on brightness and cantabile line, while the Agnus Dei turns inward again, guiding the work towards a restrained, concentrated close.
